How to Make a Small Bedroom Feel More Open

A small bedroom feels smaller when the bed blocks the door and every surface is a different color. You can get air back without buying a new bed.

Clear the sightline from the door

Stand in the doorway. You should see floor, the bed, and one calm wall. If a chair, a pile of clothes, or a tall dresser cuts that view in half, move it before you shop.

  1. Slide the bed so the longest wall holds the headboard.
  2. Keep the path from the door to the bed as straight as you can.
  3. Leave the wall opposite the bed mostly empty. One picture is plenty.

The nightstand only needs a lamp and a glass of water. A second table that does not fit can live somewhere else in the house.

Repeat one light color three times

White, warm gray, and a single muted green are easier to live with than five prints. Use the light color on the bedding, the curtain, and one pillow. The darker note can be the throw or the lamp base, not the whole wall.

Change Time What it does
Matching pillow covers One hour Stops the bed from looking busy
A warmer bulb Twenty minutes Makes the room feel softer at night
Curtain hung higher An afternoon Lifts the eye and shows more wall
One basket for clothes Ten minutes Clears the chair you never sit in

Empty wall is not unfinished wall. In a small room it is how the space breathes.

If the bedroom shares a mood with the rest of the house, the weekend living room refresh is the same idea with a sofa instead of a bed.
